In 2011, I bought myself a Canon Rebel T2i and a 50mm lens—just for fun!—and making images has since taken over large parts of my life. I learned Photoshop and Final Cut and have not quit. I have a flickr of stills here but my real passion is moving images, like these. Below is a list of projects I have worked on or am working on.

<img src="http://payload44.cargocollective.com/1/7/227863/3193117/5726437896_b6ed15bc11_b.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="1024" height_o="683" src_o="http://payload44.cargocollective.com/1/7/227863/3193117/5726437896_b6ed15bc11_b_o.jpg" data-mid="16352356" border="0" align="left"/>

2014:
—A feature film.

2013:
—Making a living primarily as an editor. I am available for commercials, short subjects and features (documentary and narrative). My favorite work so far has been cutting "Coi: Stories and Recipes" about the chef and writer, Daniel Patterson, which you can see here.
—My second short, The Lights Go Out, is in pre-production.
—I'm still editing A Lie, which is something like a documentary and something like a dance piece.

<img src="http://payload44.cargocollective.com/1/7/227863/3193117/8116614636_b769f01ce3_o.png" width="670" height="376" width_o="958" height_o="538" src_o="http://payload44.cargocollective.com/1/7/227863/3193117/8116614636_b769f01ce3_o_o.png" data-mid="30717036" border="0" align="left"/>

2012:
—My first narrative short, Headlands [14'44], still above
—A short essay film, Box Out, about dance (well, basketball), [4'45]
—A little doc about my dog, Patience Pays [6'12] You can see an excerpt here.

<img src="http://payload44.cargocollective.com/1/7/227863/3193117/IMG_1990_1000.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="1000" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload44.cargocollective.com/1/7/227863/3193117/IMG_1990_1000_o.jpg" data-mid="16352060" border="0" align="left"/>

2011:
—David's Folly [16'], about a farm in Maine with the same name. Stills available here (and above).
—Summer CH Counterpoint [2'33], available here.
—CHEZ MOCKING SEAGULL [1'54], about the apartment we rented in Cannes, is here.
—The Cannes Questionnaires series [various] available here.
—West Dressed [5'55], which was made for &Review.

Before:
—A series of shorts called Found Facts, which can be seen here. My favorite was September 08 [10'07] and you can watch it here. Made with a Canon Powershot and iMovie, these were my earliest attempts to explore the idea of digital-as-mosaic.

My old blogspot blog is where I started writing in public and it has a lot of different kinds of writing and images. Some series I'm proud of: A Conjunction of Quotations, Convergences, Alain à la recherche, BANG BANG, The Lynch Mob, SFIFF54 coverage and my Cannes 2011 coverage. Hell, we even had a podcast for a while.

As my life has shifted away from long form compositions and more stray thoughts in words (at least for now), I've begun to use my tumblr as my scrapbook, my mnemonic aid for ideas for later.

"LES" c. 2005

I started writing criticism in 2005. You can peruse a selected CV of that work below.

Criticism took a necessary backseat in 2008, however, when I graduated from UC Berkeley and started a career in brand consulting. I have worked with clients large and small, from Microsoft to Hamilton Zanze & Co., developing brand strategy, naming products and writing copy.

I still write criticism, albeit far less frequently thanks to my corporate career, and because I started to make my own movies in 2012. For more on that, click here. For all kinds of essays, keep scrolling.
